KINGS , MOUNTAIN CITIZENS ? PROTEST Present a Strong Appeal to the Oti. sen of Gaston County to Iienve the County Line Matter Settled and Not Stir I p Old Hcoi e Moroe Facts In Regard to the Election and Its Itesnlta. Kings Mtn.. X. C. Jan. 1. 1917. To the editor of The Gazette: We have noticed some recent ar ticles In your paper with reference to a suit involving the legality of the county boundary line election held in April, 1915, and we have been both surprised and pained to note the tenor pf these articles. Certainly the suggestion of whole sale fraud and other sundry charges are so preposterous and unwarranted as not to merit a sertous discussion, not" to say denial. It may be that there were some slight Irregularities on each side in that election, such as are common to elections, but the charges of fraud are absurd. How ever, the purpose of this article is not to discuss the merits of that question. In view of the present agitation It might not be amiss to state briefly the facts In regard to the purpose of the bill providing for this election and the consequent developments, and to submit these to the talr-miuu-ed and Just citizenship of Gasten county, with the hope that this great people Will not lend the coun ty's good name to an unworthy pur pose: and, confident in that belief, Me shall remain until her conduct shall force us to decide otherwise. Let it be remembered that the plan to have a bill passed providing for an election to change the boundary line between Gaston and Cleveland coun ties was introduced In the legisla ture by a Gaston county man and was passed with the approval of the Gas ton county legislators, and it whs with some difficulty that we prevail ed upon the Cleveland county legisla tors not to tight the bill and let it pass. Hence it cannot be said that Cleveland county was trying to get any of Gaston's territory, for it vas Gaston county that was the prime mover in the matter. The bill was passec und the election ordered, and Cleveland county fought to keep from losing her own territory piac tically three-fourths of the town oi Kings Mountain, which had been in Cleveland ever since the town was formed inore than to gain any ter ritory front Gaston. Jt so happen that (iaston loses only a narrow strip of territory, which places all o Kings' Mountain in the same county, which does not Injure Gaston, where as, if the whole town had gone to Gattion It would have been a, heavy blow to Cleveland. The eledlon was held in April, 1 9 1 -nearly a year and nine months ago -and both counties made similar propositions as Inducements to the voters ( decide In favor of the respective counties. The vitfe was favorable to Cleveland. Theie were 611 votes cast and Cleveland had a net majority of 71 votes, and this was duly certified and declared by the election officials of both Gas ton and Cleveland counties. This was known by everybody and appar ently accepted and acquiesced in by everybody. During the time since the election was held Cleveland county has car ried out her election promises, simil ar to those made by Gaston, and has expended more than $2-".MU0.0o in building the roads through the new territory and that involved in the election. Nobody opposed the ex penditure of this money. Now it seems that sqniebody is endeavoring to stir up trouble at this late day. Any talk about fraud in the election Is a mere pretext. There is never an election held that some body could not make complaint af terwards that everything was not Just in accordance with the precise requirements of the statute, and yet it is generally understood that if any thing was irregular in any way, such irregularities were not confined to one side alone, and certainly they were not determinative of the elec tion. In every contest of this kind one side must lose both cannot win. U Cleveland county bad' lost we would have- accepted the result in good faith and you would not find us playing the baby act; we do not be lieve the great, progressive, forward looking citizenship of the gieat coun ty of .Gaston will do so, either. We have lived friends and neighbors through 'these years. We mutually esteem each other. Our business men of Kings Mountain, and the cit izens of our town who sign this arti cle, trade and mingle freely and hap pily with the business men of Gasto nia and all of. Gaston county. We de sire this frle'ndly relationship to con tinue and we want to promote .this spirit of good fellowship and busi ness association, and we deprecate anything that wosld cause estrange Ments. - , . " ? We asJc-our friends in Gaston to tS e this matter home to themselves. Purpose after your court-house re moval election a short time ago omebody bad proposed to test the legality of the election on the ground that some money was nsed. or that there were some other irregularities, don't yon realize bow much b (ter- LIST OF THOSE WHO PAIO SUBSCRIPTIONS The Gazette's honor roll, which In cludes, the names of those who made payments on subscriptions' during the month of December, is printed be low. The size of this list cannot fall to impress one with the fact that The Gazette is still Gaston county's' lead ing newspaper and that It is the one paper, not excepting weeklies, semt- weekltes or dailies, that Gaston peo ple read most. As has been announced in each Is sue for the past two months the sub scription price was advanced the first of January from $1.50 to $2, this ac tion being made imperative on . the part of the publishers because of the great increase, in the cost of newt print paper and other materials en tering intq the making of a newspa per.. Two dollars, however, is still' a nominal price for a good semi-weekly newspaper. It represents less than half the price of an admission to a movie picture show once a week, less than the price of one cigar a week, less than a "Jitney" a week. The Gazette Is proud of its subscription list.. There are still a few In the county who do not take the paper. We hope that 1917 will see them all on the list. J M Holland.
